Age Restriction

If you are older than 30 on 7 November 2022, you will not be eligible to apply for IMP 2022. If you are younger than 18 on 7 November 2022, we encourage you to apply in the 2023 round of applications.

Whether you're younger or older than the required age range, we encourage you to stay involved and suggest joining an IMF RAW group. Visit or email: for more information.

The IMP is a program that is focused towards first time marathon runners. If you have already run a marathon, we encourage you to get involved with our Running and Walking (RAW) Groups rather than the IMP. Please see details above for information about IMF RAW.
Please indicate if you have run a marathon previously?*

How much does it cost to apply?

It is free to apply for the Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP). If you are selected into the IMP 2022 Squad, the Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF) will cover the cost of travel and accommodation for each workshop/event.

I don’t have any running experience; can I still apply?

Yes! You don’t need to have any running experience to apply for the IMP, however you must have determination, and be prepared to run 3km at try-outs.

If I wasn’t selected for IMP previously, can I apply again?

Absolutely. Please submit your application again and attend try-outs. 2022 could be your year!

Can I still apply if I have not had a COVID-19 vaccination?

Yes – whilst it is our strong preference for participants involved in our programs to be vaccinated against COVID-19, we respect that the choice to get vaccinated is a personal one. We are however concerned about the potential impacts of COVID-19 on the communities we travel to, and government requirements around travel.

If selected as part of the IMP 2022 squad, you will be required to travel (domestic and potentially international) to attend workshops and events. You will also be required to comply with the entry requirements of the jurisdiction you are travelling to. The IMF will cover the cost of your travel and accommodation for each workshop, however it is important to note that the IMF will not cover the cost of any quarantine requirements for squad members who are not vaccinated. You will also need to ensure that any quarantine requirements are completed before you attend workshops and events.

Why is there an age limit to participate in the Indigenous Marathon Project?

The IMP is a youth leadership and development program targeted towards Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 18 – 30. There is a requirement for applicants to be 18 by 6 November 2022 to be eligible to register for an international marathon.

What happens at try-outs?

You will be met by IMP Head Coach Damian Tuck, or another IMF staff member/representative.

You will be required to run 3kms and have an informal interview with the coach or IMF staff member to share a little bit about your story and why you want to participate in the IMP.

Do I need to run the whole 3km at try-outs?

Try outs are not a race. They are all about showing your determination and motivation to participate in the IMP, what you want to get out of it, and how you will use the experience, if selected. We recognise not everyone has the fitness levels to run 3km non-stop, but we ask you to give it your best shot and challenge yourself. You might be surprised at what you are capable of. You will not be ruled out if you cannot run 3km non-stop, but you must finish.

What do I need to bring at try-outs?

Comfortable clothes and shoes to run in (or you can run barefoot), and a water/drink bottle.

What happens if I can’t attend a try-out?

You should contact IMP Head Coach, Damian Tuck and let him know as early as possible. We will endeavour to reschedule your try-out if possible or schedule a virtual try-out with you.

When will the dates and locations for try-outs be announced?

The try-out tour schedule will be announced on our website and social media channels from around mid-January, and we will be in regular contact with you leading up to try-outs in your region.  Try-outs are expected to begin in early February 2022.

When will the squad be selected?

It is expected the 2022 Squad will be announced in early April 2022 with our first workshop to be held in Canberra in early May.

If selected, how much time will I need to take off work/study?

Throughout the IMP year, there are a number of compulsory workshops and running events for the IMP squad. If selected into the squad, you will need to be available for around 20-25 business days during 2022 to attend IMP activities.  We will work closely with you to assist in facilitating the time away from work/study etc.

What marathon will the squad be training to run in 2022?

Due to the unpredictable situation surrounding COVID-19 and international impacts, it is not yet determined what marathon the 2022 IMP Squad will race. There are however a number of options, and more information will be provided to the squad upon their selection.
