What is NAIDOC Week?
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The week is a great opportunity for all Australians to participate and learn more about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, cultures, and histories. For more information, visit the National NAIDOC Week website.
What is the #RunSweatInspire Festival?
The NAIDOC #RunSweatInspire Festival was started by the Indigenous Marathon Foundation in partnership with the National NAIDOC Committee and was born out of the challenges of COVID-19. The aim of the Festival is to get people active and healthy in the build up to and during NAIDOC week. It also aims to get people to recognise and learn more about the traditional country they are running on.
Can anyone participate in the NAIDOC #RunSweatInspire Festival?
No matter where you are based, either in Australia or around the world you are invited to join us and participate in our virtual event.
In doing so, we ask that you please ensure you abide by the relevant State & Federal health guidelines, as advised for each State or Territory within Australia, or the relevant guidelines as advised for the respective jurisdiction of the country you reside – for those participating outside of Australia.
What events should I enter into?
We recommend entering an event that is suitable to your level of fitness and/or total distance you are comfortable completing across the course of NAIDOC Week.
Remember to run and walk smart and be COVID safe at all times.
Where should I participate in my walk or run?
You can complete your walk or run anywhere! Choose a safe, traffic/obstacle free (if possible) and well-lit course to run or walk on. We encourage group participation as well.
What is STRAVA? And how do I get involved?
STRAVA is an app that you can download for free that helps you track your weekly, monthly, and yearly walking and running training. IMF has several STRAVA clubs that you can become a part of – we encourage you to join the our The IMF #RunSweatInspire Festival Strava Club and get involved in the conversation in the chat room and share your runs via screen shot in here with all of our awesome Club Members!
Am I eligible for a discount fee?
If you identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person or are a member of an IMF RAW Group, there is a discount code available for your entry. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org to obtain this code.
Is the NAIDOC #RunSweatInspire Festival a competitive event?
Only if you make it one! We encourage everyone to participate whether you wanted to walk 2km / jog a marathon… or walk a marathon. You can cover your chosen distance in one hit, or you could string it out over the course of NAIDOC Week. We just encourage participation and won’t be providing prizes for fastest or slowest runners or walkers.
What should I tag on social media?
Make sure you’re following the Indigenous Marathon Foundation on Facebook and Instagram and tag us in each post and use the #RunSweatInspire hashtag.
Screenshot your walk or run from Strava also and share this, along with the traditional country you are participating on.
When will my medal be sent out?
Medals will be sent out starting from July. However, there could be delays in postage due to the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. We appreciate your patience! There may be longer delays for international postage. We will email all participants to let everyone know when all medals have been posted out.
What does my entry fee and/or donation go towards?
Apart from covering some small costs associated with the NAIDOC #RunSweatInspire Festival itself, your entry fee and/or donation will go towards providing support to Rob de Castella’s Indigenous Marathon Foundations operations across Australia. With a growing list of Marathon Project Graduates and ever-expanding IMF Running & Walking Programs in over forty communities across Australia now – the need for funds to continue the IMF’s work across Australia is critical. Your support is hugely appreciated!
